The sad story behind the song ” EIGHT ” Pt 1 + Collab with Poorwa

Hii guys ! So today I decided to write something other than poems , so came up with the Idea of writing an article on my favorite song – Eight which has a really sad and heart breaking story behind it . I really want all of you to know this story and I hope you like this post !! Also this is a collab post with @Poorwasblog So do check out her post too !!

Iu and Suga had collaborated on this wonderful song called Eight . It is another song from her ” Age Series ” which includes 23 and Palatte . So Iu commented about this song saying –

“The song I released before were written in a essay format where I was talking directly to the listener. But in my song ‘ EIGHT ‘, I used several metaphors and a made up persona that I call ” you ” to tell my story of my 28 , like a short novel. I can’t be sure if this comes from the overall atmosphere of our society that is amidst hard times – perhaps both, but I will always remember my 28th year as a period of constant helplessness and lethargy, along with a longing for the ‘ orange island ‘ where there was no sadness and ‘ we ‘ were free. “

So the song is basically a journey through her own story or memory of becoming 28 and how she feels about growing up.

At the beginning of the music video, you see IU walking into a room, with a bed in the center. I do not understand much Korean, but I have seen that the orange screen says something along the lines of “do you want to see the memories?” and she clicks yes. (Please correct me if I am wrong about this)

So she lies down on the bed, and basically this means that she is going back into her memories.

The lyrics;

“So are you happy now

Finally happy now are you

Well I’m just the same

I feel like I lost everything

Everything comes and goes as they wish, even without a goodbye”

IU is referring to two of her close friends, Sulli and Jonghyun, who both committed suicide. She asks them if they are finally happy now, away from all the hate.

Jonghyun and IU
Sulli and IU

But she feels that she has lost everything, her friends that she loved. She says that they came and then left, even without a goodbye to her.

“If this is how things are, I don’t want to love anyone again”

IU is saying that she is heartbroken and if this is how things are, then she doesn’t want to love someone again.

“I’m just going to take a trip down my old memory lane”

And she is. In the music video, she is lying on the bed, and the orange screen is kind of “accessing” those memories. She is going back to her memories of her friends.

“Under the orange sun

We dance together where there are no shadows

There is no promised breakup there

See you in my memory that is beautiful

Forever young”

In these lyrics, I think that she means that in her memories, she will dance together with them, and without shadows. I may be wrong but I think this is a bit like they are not really there anymore, they are a bit like ghosts? The way that they don’t have shadows. Just my interpretation. It could be something else.

IU says that in her memories, there is no promised breakup, she means that they won’t leave her in her memories. She says “see you in my memory that is beautiful”, which means that she won’t forget them. IU says that they will always be “forever young” in her memories.
